Description

These Puff Pastry Hearts are the perfect Heart Shaped Pastries for Valentine's Day. The flaky puff pastry dough is stuffed with strawberry preserves and Nutella for a decadent dessert. Plus, they're only 5 ingredients and require only 30 minutes to make!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 13 ounce puff pastry dough (fresh, not frozen or completely thawed from freezer)
  • 1/4 cup nutella
  • 1/4 cup strawberries preserves or jam
  • 1 egg + 1 tablespoon water
  • Optional: 1/4 cup powdered sugar for topping at serving.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper, then unroll the puff pastry onto the cookie sheet. Take another sheet of parchment paper and gently smooth out the top of the pastry dough from lines and lumps. Press the cookie cutter down into the dough and wiggle a bit to separate the heart dough from the outside dough. Depending on the size of the cookie cutter, it should make about 12 hearts. Separate the outside dough around the hearts and discard or roll out again to make more hearts.
  2. Place a few shallow fork pricks into only 6 of the hearts. Note: These will be the bottoms, so I use the uglier ones that didn't come out as good.
  3. Make an egg wash by whisking together the egg with 1 tablespoon of water in a small bowl.
  4. Spread about 2 teaspoons of Nutella on the center of the heart with the fork pricks. Drop about 1-2 teaspoons of jam in the center. Brush the egg wash around the outside border of the dough. Note: Make sure you keep the Nutella and jam in the center or it won't seal correctly and could leak out.
  5. Top the pastry with the heart that hasn't been fork pricked. Push your finger around the outside edges to seal, then take the bottom 1/4 inch edge of a fork and seal the edges, like you would for the outside edge of a pie.
  6. Make a shallow slit in the tops of the hearts, but not all the way through. Brush the entire heart with egg wash. Bake for 11-15 minutes until golden.
  7. Allow the pastries to cool for a few minutes, then dust with powdered sugar. I use a mesh strainer to make it look really uniform. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Keep the puff pastry in the fridge until right before making the recipe to avoid soft and sticky dough.
  • Try not to stress too much about the shape. They don't need to be perfect.
  • Don't overfill. The Nutella and jam needs to stay toward the center so that we can seal them properly.
  • Make sure to press the edges down with your finger tips and use the fork ends to finish the seal. This will ensure that our filling doesn't bake out in the oven.
  • Allow them to cool a bit before serving because the Nutella and jam gets about as hot as lava. 🔥🔥
