Ingredients:
Puff Pastry: I always look for the Jus Rol brand because it tastes amazing and it's fresh, not frozen. You can find it near the butter and eggs at the grocery store.
Strawberry Preserves: I love the Bonne Mamam brand. It has just the right amount of sweetness with the best texture.

Substitutions and Variations:
Frozen puff pastry dough can be substituted for fresh, but it must be completely thawed. Place the frozen dough in the fridge overnight before making this recipe.
Any variation of jam or preserves can be used in this recipe, but I don't recommend using jelly because it's runnier in texture.
The powdered sugar can be left off at the end, if you prefer.

How to Make Heart Puff Pastry:
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper, then unroll the puff pastry onto the cookie sheet. Take another sheet of parchment paper and gently smooth out the top of the pastry dough from lines and lumps. Press the cookie cutter down into the dough and wiggle a bit to separate the heart dough from the outside dough. Depending on the size of the cookie cutter, it should make about 12 hearts. Separate the outside dough around the hearts and discard or roll out again to make more hearts.
Step 2: Place a few shallow fork pricks into only 6 of the hearts. Note: These will be the bottoms, so I use the uglier ones that didn't come out as good.
Step 3: Make an egg wash by whisking together the egg with 1 tablespoon of water in a small bowl.
Step 4: Spread about 2 teaspoons of Nutella in the center of the heart with the fork pricks. Drop about 1-2 teaspoons of jam in the center. Brush the egg wash around the outside border of the dough. Note: Make sure you keep the Nutella and jam in the center or it won't seal correctly and could leak out.
Step 5: Top the pastry with the heart that hasn't been fork pricked. Push your finger around the outside edges to seal, then take the bottom ¼ inch edge of a fork and seal the edges, like you would for the outside edge of a pie.
Step 6: Make a shallow slit in the tops of the hearts with a sharp knife, but not all the way through. Brush the entire heart with egg wash. Bake for 11-15 minutes until golden brown.
Step 7: Allow the pastries to cool for a few minutes, then dust with powdered sugar. I use a mesh strainer to make it look really uniform. Serve and enjoy!
Expert Tips:
- Keep the puff pastry in the fridge until right before making the recipe to avoid soft and sticky dough.
- Try not to stress too much about the shape. They don't need to be perfect.
- Don't overfill. The Nutella and jam needs to stay toward the center so that we can seal them properly.
- Make sure to press the edges down with your finger tips and use the fork ends to finish the seal. This will ensure that our filling doesn't bake out in the oven.
- Allow them to cool a bit before serving because the Nutella and jam gets about as hot as lava. 🔥🔥

Recipe FAQs:
Puff pastry is a dough made with butter, which gives it a puffy texture with layers of flaky dough. You don't even have to make your own, as the store bought version tastes amazing. It's a great short cut for making quick desserts.
Allow the pastries to cool completely to room temperature before placing in a sealed container. These can be stored in the fridge or on the counter and eaten within two days for the best freshness. If you place them in a container before cooling, condensation will get into the container and make them wet and soggy.
