Description

Homemade Pizza Subs are loaded with pepperoni, sausage and veggies for the best game day recipe. They are so easy to build in minutes, then they're oven baked until golden with crispy pepperoni and gooey cheese. Ready to eat in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces ground sausage, italian or country sausage
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 14 ounce pizza sauce container, you only need about 1/2 a jar
  • 1 and 1/2 cup mozzarella, shredded from the block
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, shredded from the block
  • 5 ounces pepperoni, cup and crisp hormel preferred
  • 1/2 cup onions, sliced
  • 1/2 cup banana peppers
  • 1/2 cup mild cherry peppers, diced
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Optional: balsamic glaze for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Place a medium sized skillet on the stovetop over medium heat. Cook the ground sausage in the skillet, breaking it up as it cooks, until no longer pink. Note: Don't overcook it, as it will continue to cook on the subs in the oven. Pour the sausage from the skillet onto a paper towel lined plate to remove excess grease and set aside.
  2. Open up the sub rolls and place on a cookie sheet. Spread on pizza sauce on both open sides, then top with a nice sprinkle of mozzarella, then parmesan cheese. Top the bottom half of the sub with all the pizza toppings you want. Note: If you add toppings to the top portion, it is difficult to close after baking. Add the cookie sheet to the oven with the subs open and bake for 12-14 minutes until golden brown with nice crisp toppings.
  3. Remove from the oven and top with balsamic glaze.
  4. Fold the top portion of the sub over. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • Shred the cheese from a block for the best melt.
  • I like to pre-cook the sausage ahead of time before adding to the subs. I know some people add it on raw, then bake, but I'm weird about raw meat touching things.
