Ingredients:
Sweet Potatoes: Baked until soft and tender in the oven and loaded with butter and brown sugar. The skin brings in a bit of texture and slight bitter taste, which is a nice balance to the sweetness of the potatoes. I suggest using 3 large potatoes or 4-5 smaller ones.
Olive Oil: Used to toss the sweet potatoes into prior to baking. Olive oil has a high burning point and helps them to roast well in the oven.
Salted Butter: Melted and poured over the sweet potatoes for a savory addition.
Brown Sugar: Adds sweetness to the potatoes with notes of caramel and molasses.
Spices: A spice blend of cinnamon, nutmeg and ground ginger adds warmth to the recipe.
See the recipe card below for ingredients and quantities.
Substitutions and Variations:
Not big on potato skin? Feel free to peel it before baking.
Want a savory version instead of sweet? Mince a few garlic cloves and cook them with the garlic butter and brush over the slices. Top with parmesan cheese and parsley before serving.
For an even stronger Fall spice profile, add in ⅛ teaspoon of cloves.
Equipment Substitute: You can also use a mandoline to slice the potatoes evenly, but I think it's easier just to cut them.
How to Make Baked Sweet Potato Slices:
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Grease a casserole dish (8x11 or 9x13) with 1 teaspoon of olive oil. Cut the ends of the sweet potatoes and discard, then slice the sweet potatoes into ¼ inch circular slices.
Step 2: Add the potatoes into a large bowl and add in remaining 2 teaspoons of olive oil and salt. Toss to combine and coat each sweet potato slice in oil and salt.
Step 3: Arrange in 3 to 4 long rows by overlapping each potato slice. Cover the dish loosely with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
Step 4: While the potatoes are baking, in a medium bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground ginger until combined. Melt butter on the stovetop or in the microwave.
Step 5: Brush the melted butter all over the tops of the potatoes, then pour remaining butter over top. Sprinkle on the brown sugar mixture, covering the entire top. Return to the oven and bake, without foil, for another 15 minutes.
Step 6: Remove the dish from the oven and allow to cool for 10-15 minutes before serving. Then, serve and enjoy!
Expert Tips👨🍳:
- Try and slice the potatoes in similar size so they cook evenly.
- Use a piece of foil to roast the potatoes in the first portion of baking. This will help them cook through in almost a steaming method.

Recipe FAQs:
These sweet potatoes are tender and baked with no crispy texture.
This recipe doesn't require removing the skin, but it's an option. Use a potato peeler to remove the brown exterior from the sweet potatoes until it's more orange in color.
Store in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, place back into a casserole dish and warm up at 350 degrees in the oven for 15 minutes.
