Ingredients:
Baked Beans- We start off with a big can of Bush's Baked Beans. Any flavor works for this recipe, but I grew up on the vegetarian ones and I love the taste.
Ground Beef- I suggest using an 85/15 ground beef. This gives us enough fat to make the meat tender and it doesn't produce a ton of grease. My second choice would be 80/20, but you will need to drain some of the excess grease from the pan.
Onion and Jalapeño- Added for crunch and flavor. I prefer using yellow onion for their sweetness. If you don't want a lot of spice, be sure to remove the seeds and membranes from the jalapeño.
Ketchup, Mustard, Worcestershire, Brown Sugar and Spices- Combine to form a bbq sauce to add additional sweet bbq flavor.
See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Variations:
Not big on spicy? Leave out the jalapeño and chili powder.
Big on veggies? Add in ½ cup of bell pepper too and cook with the onions and jalapeño.
Want to make this double the meat? Fry up some bacon, chop it into bits and mix it in with the beans.
For a vegetarian version, leave out the hamburger. For other vegetarian side dishes, try my Chickpea Pasta Salad and Air Fryer Mini Potatoes.
How to Make Baked Beans with Ground Beef:
Step 1: Add ground beef to a dutch oven or large pot over medium low heat. Use a wooden spoon to break up the meat and cook until almost fully browned, about 5 to 7 minutes. If there is more than a tablespoon of grease in the pan, remove the excess grease. Add in the onion and jalapeño and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until softened.
Step 2: Turn the heat down to low and add in the minced garlic and cook for a minute. Sprinkle in the salt, onion powder, chili powder, brown sugar, and paprika. Next, pour in the ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce and stir.
Step 3: Pour in the baked beans and stir. Cover and simmer on low heat for at least 15 minutes. Serve and Enjoy!
Expert Tips:
- When cooking the ground beef, if there is a lot of extra grease in the pan, drain most of it before adding in the onions and jalapeño. This will happen more if you use an 80/20 versus 85/15 because of the higher fat content.
- You can allow the beans to simmer on low for up to an hour. If the beans get too thick when simmering, add a few tablespoons of water or chicken stock.

Recipe FAQs:
Baked beans are delicious as is, but you can add even more flavor! Try adding meats like hamburger, which this recipe uses, or bacon. Cooked onion, bell pepper or jalapeño add in nice texture and flavor. For spices, try paprika, chili powder, onion powder, and garlic powder. I love adding Worcestershire sauce too for a umami flavor!
