When it comes to the Best Buns or Rolls for Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwiches, they've got to be soft and buttery, but also not fall apart or get soggy. Brioche Rolls are the winner in my book, but there are lots of other great options too! Check out my list below!
I am a total sucker for a pulled pork sandwich. It's probably my first choice for a sandwich, with a burger being right up there with it. Pulled pork also reminds me of Summer, which is my favorite season!

The Importance of the Pulled Pork Bun
First off, let's talk about a pulled pork sandwich. It's stuffed with delicious smoked pork butt, pulled to perfection! Then topped with lots of bbq sauce, and loaded with pulled pork coleslaw.
That's a lot for a bun to handle! We need a roll that is going to be able to hold lots of juices, so let's get started with my top 4 favorite pulled pork rolls.
These rolls are also great with my Dutch Oven Pulled Chicken recipe!
The Best Buns for Pulled Pork
1. The Brioche Bun
Brioche buns have quickly become one of my favorite buns for pulled pork and burger recipes, like these Blackstone Smash Burgers. They have the most delicious flavors and holds the sandwich together really well. Also, the shiny, buttery exterior of the bun makes any sandwich look absolutely mouthwatering.
Brioche bread is prepared with butter and eggs and tastes great in both savory and sweet recipes. I even use brioche bread in this French Toast Casserole!
It's my first pick for pulled pork!
Advantages: Taste & Structure of Bun
Disadvantages: Expensive and High in Calories and Fat
2. Hamburger Buns & Potato Rolls
These rolls above look incredibly delicious, but I'm also talking about the $2 dollar package of hamburger buns from the grocery store. These are my 2nd choice and great for on a budget.
My smoked pulled pork recipe feeds around 20 people, and that calls for a lot of buns. If you're feeding a crowd, you may want to go with the basic hamburger bun or a potato bun from the grocery store bread isle.
Advantages: Cheaper and Taste Good
Disadvantages: The juices soak through the buns a bit, especially if buying the cheapest kind.
Tip: Buy the buns fresh the day of making the pork. This will ensure they are nice and fresh.
3. Hawaiian Rolls
I absolutely love King's Hawaiian Rolls for pulled pork sandwiches and for recipes like my Hot Roast Beef Sliders and Air Fryer Turkey Burgers.
They're sweet, soft and create the funnest little sliders. I could literally eat a whole bag by myself for lunch.
Advantages: Taste & Texture, Great for Parties
Disadvantages: They're small & a bit on the expensive side if not on sale

4. Fresh Yeast Rolls
Fresh Yeast Rolls are amazing for pulled pork sandwiches. If I don't make them homemade, we get them from an Amish store about 40 minutes away. It's worth the drive!
I love them for their buttery taste and prefer a bit of sweetness, like sugar or honey added into the dough before baking.
Advantages: Sweet, buttery taste and good texture
Disadvantages: Take a long time to make and can be on the heavy side for sandwiches
If you're waiting on fresh rolls to rise, consider making some easy side dish recipes that pair with pulled pork, like these Baked Beans with Ground Beef, Lemon Orzo Pasta Salad, and Cowboy Caviar.
Expert Tips for Pulled Pork Rolls:
Try toasting the brioche, hamburger or potato buns to help avoid any soggy texture.
Recipe FAQs:
A rough estimate is 3 to 4 sandwiches per pound of pulled pork.
My first choice is a brioche bun. Other great options include hamburger or potato buns, dinner rolls, and hawaiian rolls.
A pork shoulder, also known as a Boston Butt, is used for a pulled pork sandwich. Pork shoulder is marbled with fat and cook best low and slow on a Smoker.
More Ideas for Serving Pulled Pork:
How about a completely different kind of roll..the Pulled Pork Egg Roll. These egg roll wrappers are stuffed with pulled pork and slaw and so yummy!
Also, whip up my same day pizza dough recipe and top it with bbq sauce, cheese, thin red onion and pulled pork!
