Ingredients:
All Purpose Flour: A versatile flour used in cakes and cookies. I like using unbleached King's Arthur flour or Kirkland Unbleached Organic Flour from Costco.
Unsalted Butter: Softened to room temperature and creamed with granulated sugar for a light, tender cookie dough.
Egg: To bind ingredients and provide structure.
Baking Powder and Baking Soda: To help the cookies rise. A heavier amount of baking soda is used for a chewier texture.
Vanilla Extract: Used for flavoring the sugar cookies.
Sprinkles: Soft sprinkles are used to coat the outside of the cookies. It's Christmas season, so I used red, green and white, but use any holiday colors or rainbow for birthdays.

Substitutions and Variations:
- Any sprinkles should work for this recipe, but I prefer the softer sprinkles because they bake really well into the cookies and have a good texture.
- The sprinkles can also be left off for classic sugar cookies, or you could roll them in granulated sugar.

How to Make Sprinkle Sugar Cookies:
Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
Step 2: In a stand mixer bowl with beater attachment (or large bowl with hand mixer), cream together the softened butter and sugar on medium low speed for 2 minutes. Scrape down the sides as needed.
Step 3: Add egg, vanilla extract and mix on medium low speed until blended, about 60 seconds.
Step 4: Pour in dry ingredients and blend on low speed, just until combined. Refrigerate the dough in the bowl for 1 hour.
Step 5: Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Roll the dough into balls (about 2 teaspoons in size) and coat the entire outside in sprinkles. Spread about 12 cookies out on each cookie sheet. (The dough makes about 24 cookies total.)
Step 6: Slightly press down on each cookie just a bit.
Step 7: Bake for 11-13 minutes until slightly golden. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Note: Avoid handling too much until cooled, because the sprinkle color gets on your hands.
Step 8: Serve and enjoy!
Expert Tips:
- Allow the butter to soften to room temperature before making the cookies. Properly creamed butter and sugar will help the cookies be airy and light with the best texture.
- Chilling time is required for this recipe because the dough is too sticky to roll into balls without it. Make sure to chill in the fridge for at least 45 minutes to 1 hour. Don't leave in the fridge longer than 2 hours or it will get too hard to work with.

Recipe FAQs:
If you want them to stick to the dough, roll them in sprinkles before baking. If you want to frost them, then add the sprinkles after baking on top of the frosting.
Allow the cookies to cool, then store in a sealed container or ziplock bags on the countertop. Eat within 3 days for the freshest taste.
Once you're done making the batter, chill for 1 hour, then roll into balls, then freeze, preferably vacuum seal for the freshest taste. Use within 2-3 months. To bake, allow the frozen dough to thaw completely. Roll into sprinkles and bake on 350 degrees for 11-13 minutes.
