This broccoli recipe with teriyaki sauce is one of my favorite simple side dishes to pair with these Asian Turkey Meatballs and Teriyaki Beef Bowls. It also pairs really well with salmon, chicken or shrimp over this Blackstone Fried Rice.
The teriyaki sauce provides a light coating over the broccoli, so it's not too salty, but provides a subtle flavor. The sesame seeds add the perfect finishing touch.
Even my kids love the teriyaki flavors in this pan seared broccoli. They gobbled up almost the entire plate!

Ingredients:
Broccoli: The star of the recipe and packed with nutrition and fiber. It sautés in the pan until nice and tender and goes really well with umami flavor from the teriyaki sauce. Try this Broccoli Cheddar Chicken Soup too!
Olive Oil and Sesame Oil: Used in combination to pan sear the broccoli. I find the taste of sesame oil to be pretty strong, and you need a bit of it to roast the broccoli without burning. I like the mixture of the two oils in this recipe.
Water: Helps to steam the broccoli and make it more tender.
Soy Sauce, Hoisin Sauce, Rice Vinegar, Garlic and Ginger: Create a simple teriyaki sauce. If you love teriyaki flavors, make sure to try these Ground Chicken Lettuce Wraps and Teriyaki Pineapple Chicken Meatballs too.
Sesame Seeds: An optional ingredient, but I highly recommend for taste and texture.

Variations and Substitutions:
Broccolini can be used in place of the broccoli, but it's usually a bit more expensive.
If you don't want to make the homemade teriyaki sauce, use 2 tablespoons of jarred teriyaki sauce. I highly recommend using the garlic and ginger for additional flavor even if using store-bought sauce.
Love heat? Spice it up with a dash of chili oil or red pepper flakes.

How to Make Teriyaki Broccoli:
Step 1: Wash, then dry the broccoli to avoid the oil popping in the skillet. Chop the broccoli into small florets. Remove the large stalk and discard.
Step 2: In a large stainless skillet over medium low heat on the stovetop, add in the sesame oil and allow it to heat up. Toss in the broccoli and drizzle the olive oil over the top of the broccoli. Cook for two minutes. Stir, and cook for another two minutes.
Step 3: Have the skillet lid ready in one hand and position it over the top of the pan. Quickly and carefully pour in the water, then close the lid completely. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the water dissolves in the pan.
Step 4: While the broccoli is steaming, make the teriyaki sauce by combining the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, ginger, and garlic. Stir to combine.
Step 5: Uncover the pan and pour in the sauce. Stir to coat the broccoli. Cover and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until tender.
Step 6: Top with sesame seeds if desired, then serve and enjoy!
Expert Tips:
- I recommend a stainless steel skillet for even cooking and for the way it roasts the broccoli.
- Be extremely careful when adding the water into the skillet and be ready to cover immediately to avoid any oil popping. It hurts like bacon grease...ouch!

Recipes FAQs:
To save more of the ginger, use the side of a spoon to peel the skin off the ginger. If you're lazy like me, you can chop the skin off with a knife, but you lose more of the ginger this way. After the skin is peeled off, grate the inner portion on a microplane or on the smallest setting of the cheese grater.
Store the leftover broccoli in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the skillet over medium low heat until hot.
