Ingredients:
Sour Cream: The creamy base of this dip. I recommend the regular version, not low fat. Sour cream has a creamy texture with a hint of tangy flavor, which goes well with the green onions.
Green Onions: Green onions pack a mild onion taste with a hint of peppery like flavor.
Garlic: Adds a raw, pungent bite to the dip.
Lemon juice: For just a touch of acidity to balance out the flavors.
Spices: Dried parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper come together for a similar seasoning mix to ranch dressing. It pairs really well with the cool sour cream.
Hot Sauce: For extra flavor and a little heat. I love the Cholula brand, because it has really mild heat, but it's full of flavor and it's not watery like other hot sauces.
See recipe card below for full ingredient list and quantities.
Substitutions and Variations:
The Green Onion can be substituted with scallions or chives in this recipe.
Prefer roasted garlic to raw garlic? Toast the minced garlic in 1 teaspoon of butter on the stovetop for a few minutes. Allow to cool, then add into the dip.
Love dill? Add in ¼ teaspoon at a time until you get the desired taste.
Big on heat? Splash in extra hot sauce or sprinkle in cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes.
How to Make Green Onion Dip:
Step 1: Add the sliced green onions, sour cream, lemon juice, hot sauce, minced garlic, dried parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper to a large bowl. Stir to combine. Optional: Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour to allow flavors to blend.
Step 2: Pour into a serving dish and top with additional green onions. Serve with chips and vegetables.
Expert Tips:
- When slicing the green onions, cut them on a bias, a 45 degree angle. This creates a more elegant look.
- Mince the garlic really fine in this recipe, since it is strong in its raw form.

Recipe FAQs:
My favorite vegetables to serve with this sour cream and green onion dip are cucumbers, baby carrots, bell peppers cut into strips, and broccoli.
The entire portion of the dark green and light green are good for this recipe. Don't use the fully white part near the root. This will be a stronger onion like taste, that we don't want for this recipe.
Store in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
